How to Solve a 3x3 Rubik's Cube

A simple, step-by-step guide for beginners using the Layer-by-Layer method.

i

Basic Move Notation

Before you begin, learn the basic letters used to describe moves. Each letter means rotating that face 90 degrees clockwise. An apostrophe (') means counter-clockwise.

F Front
R Right
U Up
L Left
B Back
D Down
1

The Daisy & White Cross

Hold the cube with the yellow center facing UP.

Create a "Daisy" on the top face by placing 4 white edge pieces around the yellow center. Then line up the side colors with their centers and turn each 180° to move white edges to the bottom face.

2

Solve First Layer Corners

Hold the cube with the white cross at the bottom.

Find a corner piece with white on the top layer. Position it directly above its target slot and repeat the 4-move "Sexy Move" until the corner settles into place:

R U R' U'
3

Solve the Middle Layer

Find a top edge piece without yellow. Align its front color to form a matching "T" with the center.

To move the edge to the RIGHT:

U R U' R' U' F' U F

To move the edge to the LEFT:

U' L' U L U F U' F'
4

The Yellow Cross

Look at the top face. Execute this algorithm to progress from Dot $\rightarrow$ "L" shape $\rightarrow$ Line $\rightarrow$ Yellow Cross:

F R U R' U' F'
5

Orient Yellow Corners

Orient all top corners so the entire top face becomes yellow. Repeat the Sune algorithm:

R U R' U R U2 R'
6

Position Corners & Edges

Position top corners using headlight pairs facing back:

R' F R' B2 R F' R' B2 R2

Finally, cycle edge pieces to complete the cube:

F2 U L R' F2 L' R U F2
